Laikipia · Nyeri · NakuruBuilding the SMART Advocacy skills civil society organizations and youth need to identify priorities, map targets and influencers, and drive evidence-based advocacy on health governance and Universal Health Coverage.
Pathways continues to believe that the 2020–2030 decade will be driven by organizations that conduct SMART Advocacy on health governance. Universal Health Coverage and care will be realized when civil society organizations, together with citizens, identify their key priorities and advocate for them in national and sub-national policies. PPI leads the way in conducting SMART Advocacy training for civil society organizations and youth in Kenya, building the skills to map their targets and influencers and engage them.
In 2020 and 2021, with support from PAI, PPI conducted an Out-of-Pocket (OOP) expenditure study in Laikipia, Nyeri, and Nakuru counties to determine how much women spend from their own funds to access reproductive, maternal, and child health services. The study found that, on average, women spend $3 at public health facilities to access family planning services.
PPI also carried out a Kenya FP budget analysis with a specific focus on Laikipia County, conducting evidence-based advocacy with County Assembly members and County Health Management Teams for increased funding for FP/SRH and an improved modern Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (mCPR). This advocacy work informed the Laikipia PHC business case and the Nyeri County Family Planning and Reproductive Health midterm review strategy.
PPI continues to advocate for increased public participation and engagement with the county governments of Nyeri, Laikipia, and Nakuru in the development of their Costed County Integrated Development Plans (CIDPs), ensuring the Universal Health chapter reflects the UHC policy agenda of increased access, quality, and affordable health care.
Equipping civil society organizations and youth with the skills to identify advocacy priorities, map their targets and influencers, and engage them effectively.
Conducting Out-of-Pocket expenditure studies and FP budget analyses that ground advocacy asks to County Assemblies and Health Management Teams in hard evidence.
Advocating for increased public participation in the development of Costed County Integrated Development Plans across Laikipia, Nyeri, and Nakuru.
